The Promise (first Avatar: The Last Airbender comic trilogy) hardcover collection It really evokes emotion for me- nostalgia and adventure, homesickness and comfort, longing and joy- all at the same time. It’s just beautiful, something I would love to have on my walls, and something that just draws me in and leaves me daydreaming. The picture on the front is just what I love the most in children’s book illustrations. We picked this book up at the library last week and I knew the minute I saw it that I would love it. It was written from Marcus POV with beautiful pencil drawn illustrations that made story come to life. Writing was entertaining, easy to follow and understand by kids. The story was about teamwork, friendship, film making, and not quitting on your dream. Marcus Makes a Movie was fun and entertaining middle grade illustrated novel that revolved around Marcus turning his superhero comic into a movie and all the roadblocks he had to overcome. *** Disclaimer : I received e-copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. But as Marcus discovers, nothing great ever is–and if you want your dream to come true, you’ve got to put in the hustle to make it happen. So he’ll need help, from his friends, his teachers, Sierra, the strong-willed classmate with creative dreams of her own, even Tyrell, the local bully who’d be a perfect movie villain if he weren’t too terrifying to talk to. until he realizes he can turn the story of the cartoon superhero he’s been drawing for years into an actual MOVIE! There’s just one problem: he has no idea what he’s doing. Marcus is NOT happy to be stuck in after-school film class. 6/9/2023 0 Comments Fates and furies pagesTrue, far more people bought the UK equivalent, Paula Hawkins’s The Girl on the Train, than Fates and Furies in 2015, but they talked about it less enthusiastically. The cherry on the top came from Barack Obama, who earlier this month told People magazine he liked Fates and Furies more than anything else he’d read in 2015. Not only has Groff’s novel, by the Wall Street Journal’s count, landed on more US year-end best-of lists than any other work of fiction, but Amazon has made it official, stamping its endorsement on Fates and Furies as the retailer’s book of the year. Critics love it, or – even better – debate its merits. Celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Carrie Brownstein and Miranda July are pictured on Instagram with it. In fact, the book that “everybody” seems to be reading often climbs no higher than a respectable but unspectacular slot on the bestseller list. T o qualify as the US book of the year – that ineffable title to which Lauren Groff’s third novel, Fates and Furies, lays persuasive claim – a novel needs more than just blockbuster sales. 6/9/2023 0 Comments Borges and Me by Jay PariniIt was too wonderful, unlikely, and satisfying: a blind old poet beside a putting green. A hilarious dinner party, where, under the influence of Reid’s dope-infused brownies, blind Borges takes off at speed across a beachside golf course, using crashing waves and the noise of screeching gulls as a guide, with the intent of chanting out The Seafarer on the edge of the North Sea. Borges visits Reid and, of course, Jay is introduced. Reid, as many will know, is a poet of some note and also a translator of Borges’ poems. He is introduced to, and becomes friends with, Alastair Reid, his son Jasper and their lodger Jeff. thesis on the poetry of Mackay Brown, under the supervision of Professor Alec Falconer. The Vietnam draft is hanging over Parini like the proverbial dagger so he leaves America to enroll at St. The student is Jay Parini, who, in 1970, at the behest of Jorge Luis Borges, no less, circumnavigates the Highlands in a car that has a connection to the road that seems more spiritual than rubber on tarmac. But this narrative is more biography than fiction. “How on earth had I landed in bed with an elderly, loquacious blind man in a remote village in the Scottish Highlands?”Ī famous blind Argentinean writer, an American student, driving an old Morris Minor, touring the Scottish Highlands. 6/9/2023 0 Comments The matrix lauren groffMarie’s modifications to the abbey are guided by visions that draw imagery from the real Marie de France’s tales of courtly love. Marie soon rises to the senior position of abbess, and she transforms the convent into a thriving estate. As a teenager, Groff’s fictional Marie is banished from Eleanor of Aquitaine’s court and sent to molder in an impoverished abbey. Set in a small convent in 12th-century England, Matrix looks back in time to comment astutely on the world as we now know it, exploring big ideas about faith, gender, community and individualism.Ībbess Marie is based in part on Marie de France, France’s earliest known female poet and one of the country’s most well-regarded literary stylists. Lauren Groff’s fourth novel, her highly anticipated follow-up to Fates and Furies (2015), takes place almost 800 years ago, yet it feels both current and timely. 6/8/2023 0 Comments Reisner cadillac desertWhen the dam crumbled, it sent a 200-ft high wall of water to the sea, killing more than 400 people and destroying 1,200 homes. It had been built by the legendary William Mulholland, a self-taught hydro-engineer, who presided over the aqueduct from Owens valley and was a popular hero. Reisner recounted the drama of the collapse of the Saint Francis dam in a valley of shale, north-west of Los Angeles, in 1928. They have read Reisner's book, which describes how the water was stolen, how the Owens lake, which once bore paddle steamers, was turned into a dustbowl, and how the canal was bombed by local people in the 1920s. Tourists on their way to Death Valley today sometimes pause to look at the aqueduct that carries water from the once-fertile Owens valley more than 300 miles to Los Angeles. Reisner had the remarkable ability to explain entertainingly the complex, and often numbing, deals and disputes in the "water wars" that have plagued the west, particularly California, for nearly 200 years. Its black and white photographs of the men who built the massive Hoover dam, on the Colorado river near Las Vegas, were as compelling por traits of human endeavour and courage as images from the second world war. As a television documentary series, often beautiful as well as revelatory, it was screened in America in 1997, and was shown abroad, including in Britain. She is a perfectionist, or at least her parents aim for her to be. With each character having just as much importance as the other characters, I will introduce them in order of appearance in the book:ĭiana. The book contains 6 main characters, each with a different backstory and two similarities: they go to the same school, and…each is carrying a book bag. Making readers wonder “What if this happened at my school?” The fact that the school is never named, enables the author to make it seem more realistic, as readers are left to imagine their school building. Through the context that some students can drive and some students are considering their future, it can be inferred that it’s a High School. Time Bomb is placed in an unnamed school. When they hear that someone inside is the bomber, they’ll also be looking to one another for answers. They couldn’t be more different, but before the morning’s over, they’ll all be trapped in a school that’s been rocked by a bombing. A guy who wants people to see him, not his religion. An orphaned rebel who wants to teach someone a lesson. A clarinet player who’s done trying to fit in. A congressman’s daughter who has to be perfect. |
